What campaign organisations should have in place before election day
Summary

Election day readiness is built in the weeks before it, not on the day itself. A checklist of operational, legal, and communications preparations separates ready campaigns from reactive ones.

Election day is the end of a long campaign, and a campaign that is not ready for it will lose ground it has spent months building. Readiness is built in the final weeks, not on the day.

A ready campaign organisation has four things in place before election day.

First, a field plan that accounts for every polling unit, every agent, every reporting channel, and every contingency for agent absence or disruption. Second, a legal and compliance framework that ensures all observers are accredited, all documentation is in order, and escalation paths are clear. Third, a communications protocol for the day, including who speaks, when, and on what authority, and a rapid-response plan for disputes or incidents. Fourth, a results monitoring process that aggregates reports from the field, identifies discrepancies early, and supports lawful challenge where warranted.

Scenario rehearsals in the final weeks expose gaps that cannot be fixed on the day. A campaign that has rehearsed its election-day operations will execute them; one that has not will improvise under pressure.
