Summary

Constituency research only matters when it shapes the campaign plan. The link between research findings and planning decisions is where most campaigns lose ground.

Constituency research is an investment, and like any investment it must produce a return. The return is a campaign plan that is grounded in reality rather than assumption.

Good constituency research answers three questions. Who lives here, and what do they care about? Where is support concentrated, and where is it thin? What messages and messengers will reach each segment?

The handover from research to planning is the critical moment. Too often, research is presented as a report and then set aside while the campaign plan is built from intuition. The discipline is to make every major planning decision, from targeting to resource allocation to messaging, traceable to a research finding.

If a decision in the plan cannot be linked to evidence, the team should ask whether it is a decision at all. Research that does not change the plan was not worth commissioning.
